My executive coaching journey with Jane over the past 12 or more months has been a thoroughly intriguing and enlightening experience. Jane's observations on how I used to work and interact with those in my workplace has helped to unpick, stabilise and lift a range of entrenched problem areas.

Design and Construction Executive

I had recently taken on my first senior leadership role, leading a multi-disciplined team both within and outside my realm of experience. I was ready for the challenge, yet felt I lacked the confidence in my ability to succeed in fostering the right team environment and in turn, leverage the opportunity as a stepping stone to future career progression.

Senior Leader in the Private Sector

After a career in industry, I had worked the last seven years as a Section Lead in the Commonwealth Public Service. At the time I met Jane, I had just started a longer-term acting role in my agency as a Senior Executive and Head of a Branch. I had acted at that level for periods before. However, this time it was much more challenging because I was working in an area where I had no previous experience and no subject matter expertise. This left me questioning what value I could add, what “success” would look like, and what skills I should look to grow. I was hoping that coaching might help me grapple with those questions.
I contacted Jane on the recommendation of somebody whose judgement I trust and respect. A short previous experience with coaching had not really worked for me. I thought it could be that my expectations had been too high, or my own attitude had been to blame. Therefore, I was definitely a bit sceptical if coaching was going to give me what I was looking for this time. I was of course also unsure if Jane would understand what I was looking for (given I didn’t really know myself!).

From the start, it was obvious that Jane was not going to swamp me with quick answers or formulaic solutions. She understood what I was after. Her approach involved listening, asking questions, and making me challenge my own assumptions and thought processes (with some theory thrown in at the right time!). I straight away felt I got something out of the sessions. Jane’s approach helped me develop possible answers to my questions. I came away keen to try new things out. As a result, I felt real ownership of the insights I gained.
I have become much more confident in trying out new things, and not being daunted by the thought of being out of my depth. I have learnt how to recognise the value that I can add, for example to my team by empowering them as well as leading them. The coaching has undoubtedly helped me lift my game to have a much better handle on the “level” of thinking that is required in my role.

Finally, and not least, the coaching supported me in deciding to apply for my job when it was eventually advertised, and then supported me in a (successful!) application.
As a result of the coaching I have become much more confident, and ready to engage with difficult aspects of my job. I have learnt a lot. I am more willing to try things out. I find myself asking better questions of others, as well as myself—and therefore getting better answers. It has made me keen to continue pushing my boundaries, so as to keep expanding my performance.

I was a partner of the law firm I’d jointly founded almost 18 years earlier. I was burnt out, with a chronically sore neck, tired of the conflict and intensity at work and feeling the same future relentlessly stretching out before me.

When Jane saw how stressed I was and offered to talk it gave me the lifeline I needed to step back and look at my life and career. I did not realise until we got started how very useful that would be for me.

Jane’s sensitivity to how I was feeling and her optimistic, skilful, and inspiring approach helped me make the decision to go ahead.

The major hurdle I overcame at the outset was to be able to find the time and desire to step back and look at my career by examining my personal ethics, motivations, skills, and goals. That helped me work out that I did not want to and would not continue the same as before. The next hurdle was realising that I had the freedom to leave my own business and to take some time off while I worked out “what next.” Then it was a matter of planning how to leave which, surprisingly, ended up happening quite quickly and was much easier than I had imagined.

With Jane’s coaching I was able to surmount these hurdles and do so in a supported, creative, and positive way. Life is much better now—I have a portfolio of smaller, far less intense, and not overwhelming occupations which keep me busy and fit far better with my other goals and life plans.

I would absolutely recommend Jane’s services. It’s great to have someone who can guide you and focus you on what might be right there in front of you about your career but you can’t see because you’re so deeply in it.
